Fifty years ago, it was popular practice to pull "problem" teeth and replace them with dentures or "plates". The result was a long-lasting biting surface that would reduce the need for future dental appointments and, hopefully, keep the dentist away! Today, dentists want patients to keep teeth and use dentures as a last resort, rather than a quick fix.
Dentures are not intended to be a substitute for teeth, but, instead, should be a substitute for NO teeth.
Those who would prefer to replace natural teeth rather than restore them should understand that, at best, dentures can only be 40% as effective as natural teeth. In addition, like a car, dentures need scheduled maintenance for best performance.
Dentures are an excellent option for those who need them (i.e. already have several missing teeth), but should not be considered if damaged teeth can be restored.
